By: Ali Tayefi Most of democratic and developed countries in the world are Christian ones. On the contrary, most of non-democratic and undeveloped countries are Islamic and Orthodox ones. A.Linjphart (2002) deems 36 countries to be stable democracies during the past 20 years that none has an Islamic majority! Between Islamic countries, some ones that include Muslim majority are more non-democratic (such as Arab countries in Middle East, Iran &...) than others (like Malaysia, India &...).
There are more than 50 Islamic countries in the world which have old economic structure and are most important regions of world that have anti-human rights activities. In the worldviews of the people of world there are two dimensional scales (Ingelhart,2006):· Polarization between traditional and secular-rational orientations toward authority. Traditional versus secular-rational values are: religion is very important, one should teach a child to obey, a strong sense of national pride, a main goal in life is to make parents proud, divorce & abortion is never justifiable, need limits on selling foreign goods, need more respect for authority. Secular-rational values emphasize the opposite. Islamic countries constitute traditional values.· Polarization between survival and self-expression values.
Survival values vs. self-expression values emphasize to: economic security over self-expression (materialist over post-materialist values), men make better political leaders and have more right to a job than women, good income and safe job over a sense of accomplishment, homosexuality is never justifiable, reject foreigners, are unhappy and dissatisfied with life, non-involvement in politics and environmental protection.
Self-expression values are the opposite. Islamic countries constitute survival values. Some of the most important characteristics of non-democratic or Islamic countries specially Iran, in this article, are: financial-political corruption, neglecting of women rights, inequality of women and men, absent of religious freedom, absent of speech and thought freedom, suppress of other non-relationship intellectuals and oppression against ethnic and religious minorities (Human rights watch report, 20006).
Iran as an Islamic country with a fundamentalist government, although, has an elected parliament and president, but major decisions are made by non-elected clerics and an absolutist Islamic leader (velaate faghih). In other word, Islamic culture, religion and regime of Iran has all of traditional and survival values which prevent structures of democratic growth (see above). In the base of world values survey (2002) about support of democracy among 80 countries, most of Islamic countries especially Iran has lowest support (percent): Iran with 69 % has 78 ranking among 80 countries! In other index on support for gender equality, there are same situations for Islamic countries specially: Iran with 23 % has 70 ranking among 80 countries!
Democracy in Twentieth Century Report (2002) has showed that number of world democracies has increased from zero in 1900 to 120 ones in 2000, which include 58 % of world population. In addition, there are only 20 % of world population that have Authoritarian government specially Iran.World migration Report (2003) has pointed that there are 650 % growth rate in brain drain in the Middle East, from 1970 with 200,000 to 2000 with 150 millions immigrant s. In 1970, there were 15 % Muslims between middle eastern immigrants, but this figure has increased up to 73 % in 2000 with 1/100 millions immigrants! Iran, among them, has more than 4 millions immigrants in the world! Dictatorship, suppression of parties, war, prosecution and execution of political intellectuals, forced veiling, no freedom of thoughts and speech, and Islamic Ideology and system are the most important factors that have lead to escape of high- qualified persons in Iran.
World Corruption Report (2005) has proved that Iran got 93 rankings among 159 countries. Most of Islamic countries have a bad conditions and ranks in this report.World freedom report (2005) has emphasized that between 141 countries of the world, Iran, from viewpoint of civil-political freedom, has gained 118 ranking. Iran between scales of 1-7 (low to high) points on freedom has gotten 1 point!
Iran, In addition, from dimension of democratic institutions, has gained 88 ranking (3 point) between 141 countries. Finally, Islamic values and culture is not consistence with democratic culture and its laws (Sharias) could not adapt themselves with democracy and freedom principles in the world. Iran, also, between more than 50 Islamic countries has a same situation and there is not any perspective on the democracy in the future specially with existing Islamic regime and ideology.
